The enigmatic Paula graces the dust jacket cover of BURNERS.

Twenty-six portraits from the book were chosen to be part of the Smithsonian’s Renwick gallery exhibition of “No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man.”  In 2019, the exhibition traveled to Cincinnati, OH, and eventually to Oakland, CA. I was the only photographer with multiple images in the exhibits.

The book won a bronze medal for Coffee Table Books in 2018.

“The year after my wife’s death from ALS, I attended my first Burning Man.  More than anything else at the event, I was moved by something completely unexpected: The Temple of Forgiveness.  There, Burners left mementos to those who had died, each keepsake disappearing in smoke as the Temple burned on the last day of the event.

Feeling compelled to do something to support future Temples, I did what I knew how to do–photography. I would use portraiture to reveal the incredible diversity of Burning Man participants for the eventual publication of a book. Profits from the sale of the book would be donated for the construction of future Temples.

Ten years later I published BURNERS, a book of portraits created in a pop-up studio I built every year at Center Camp.”
